What should the average person do if they see some kids not seatbelted in?
I was behind a "mini" van yesterday and the only kid of the 7 in the van that had its seatbelt on was the baby ... the only reason I even noticed was because the mom was on the cell phone and cut me off without even realizing it. We were doing 45 mph at the time and when I looked through their back window I could see them bouncing all over the place.
What should we do if we see something like that? I mean, it isn't exactly an emergency ... yet. But we all know what a tragedy it will be when (not if, when) eventually the mom gets in a wreck and kids are tossed all over.
I don't want to see her go to jail or anything lol, but someone in authority needs to demand she buckle those kids in!!!
Unfortunately there's not much you can do.
You could call the highway patrol like what was suggested above. A lot of states have numbers like *HP or something like that. They would be the non emergency preference.
If you choose to call 911, preface your call with "This is not an immediate emergence but I'd like to report as unsafe driver that...". This will allow the 911 operator to prioritize the call. i.e. Put you on hold if an immediate emergency existed or transfer your call. The 911 operator will ask you for information as to location and vehicle type and color. Be prepared to give them as much information as possible.
While 911 is for emergencies, the police would much rather be giving out a ticket than filing an accident report explaining why a kid went through the window and was killed.
Note to Eric below that said "Its the lord's way of thinning out the bad DNA in the murky gene pool." Her stupidity of not using seatbelts for her kids is not a hereditary trait but instead a poor environmental example for her kids. Her getting a ticket would be the best thing that could happen for the kids. Killing her kids in an accident would not be thinning the right persons genes.
