Enjoy A Skiing Holiday This Coming Winter
The weather in the UK this Summer has been far from hot, glorious sunshine. There has been so much rain, that it is very easy to forget which season we are supposed to be in. With Autumn now upon us and Winter looming, is the rain going to set in or will the sun decide to shine? Will it be freezing cold or relatively mild? Will there be snow this Christmas or won't there?
Many people pray for a white Christmas, whilst many others dread the thought and would prefer to stay in bed during snowy spells. However, if you are the type of people who listen to the weather every night and get your hopes up at the slight mentions of a Winter downfall, then why not head off for a skiing holiday. There are plenty of places not that far from home that glitter white during the winter months, and make perfect destinations for an exciting trip.
If you are regular skiers then you will certainly know the thrill this sport can bring and properly go all out buying the fashionable skiing accessorise, such as multicoloured bobble hats. If you are not regular skiers, the thought of attempting this activity may seem slightly terrifying, however, there is no need to fret.
The great thing about skiing is that it is open to people of all ages and all abilities. You can join classes of all levels and can take things at your own pace. You can even watch as you kids set off with others there own age and will most likely be in amazement when in a few hours they are whizzing past you. You may decide to go it alone, but make sure you check out your routes properly.
It is important to be of relatively good health and have pretty strong knees in order to get the most out of your trip. However, if you feel fit and ready to give it a go, then why not. I would recommend that no matter how fit you think you are, that you still try a few exercises before your holiday. Exercises particularly useful are stepping on and off a raised object, such as the bottom of the stairs. Laying on your sides with your legs stretched and doing leg raises. If there are any hills near you, why not take a walk to the top on several occasins. All of these activities will help prepare you for skiing and you will enjoy it more if you are prepared. Moreover, if you fancy heading into the snow, but not onto the slopes, then why not just take advantage of the "apres-ski" at all hours of the day. There are usually plenty of little caverns to hide away in and the scenery is often breathtaking.
A few years ago I boarded a bus and twenty seven hours later arrived in Austria (I should have flown), however, when I saw the beauty that surrounded me and began to tackle the slopes, it was all worthwhile. If you are a beginner like I was, you will be taken to some practise slopes, however, so long as you feel alright, don't expect to stay there very long. The instructor pointed up towards the highest mountain I could see and said by the end of the week we would be up there. I thought it was a joke. It turned out not to be.
The thought of tackling the high mountains should not put you off. If you don't want to, you don't have to. However, I would recommend that you give it your all and throw yourself into everything. It may break your comfort zone at times, however, you will feel so proud when you reach the low ground once again. One important thing to note is that the smaller mountains can often be steep and surprisingly challenging, but remember you don't have to go down them, but it is always great to try. Going right to the highest point does not mean that all the slopes are going to be very hard. If you go with an instructor they will guide you down a sensible route and if your lucky you can stop half way for a refreshing drink in a bar nestled in the mountains. Perfect.
If you decide to go away this winter on a skiing break then there are definitely some essentials you need to take with you. You will need to to have water proof trousers and jacket, which are available at ski stores and most sports shops. If you do not want to buy, particularly if you are trying skiing out for the first time, you may want to rent. This is an easy, efficient and often cost effective way to get the clothes you need for your trip, again, simply check out your nearest ski shops.
Thermals are also a necessity, a pair of thermal trousers to go under your waterproofs and then maybe just a tight fitting t-shirt will be fine for underneath your jacket. Thick socks are a must, make sure you have plenty, as your feet will get very smelly and often very wet. Goggles or sun glasses are important- these can be as fashionable as you want, the sun will reflect off the snow and you do not want to be blinded whilst trying to navigate the slopes. Most people like to wear a hat and usually the theme is the crazier the better. Hats are trendy, but also stop your scalp and forehead from burning- sun reflecting off snow can be dangerous especially when you are outside for long periods of time throughout the day. Lip salve is so often forgotten but is an essential item to take with you. Ensure it is lip salve with sun screen, as this will save you from chapped and sunburnt lips.Finally, gloves are an essential and will protest your hands from sharp skis and the cold.
If you do decide to go in search of snow this winter, enjoy. It really is a thoroughly exciting adventure.

Anyone have suggestions for a great winter camping hat for women that is for 20-30 degrees weather?
I have a Seirus Quickdraw which has the face mask which bundles up into the hat, it is made of thick fleece; it is only good for about 55 degrees on me, and this is during the day while I am up and moving. I am looking for something that I can primarily wear in the tent while I am sleeping, so it needs to be extra warm. I 'sleep' very cold. It's not important to me that it be waterproof.
Normally I would think that the Quickdraw would do the trick. At 55F. I don't even wear a hat and can get by on just a Polartec 100 fleece hat in temps as low as 0F. (I suppose it's all relative...20-30F isn't that cold to me.)

I have a few windbloc hats and find them extremely warm. My hat from OR barely gets used when doing anything active and only goes on when I'm sitting doing nothing.
