Panic Attack Recovery – How You Can Get Your Life Back After Multiple Panic Attacks
I am an individual who once suffered from panic attacks. I know the devastation that they can cause to your mind and body. If you are such an individual who has been afflicted, please understand that panic attack recovery is very much a possibility. The secret is that you must never, ever give up hope.
Ideally, for an increased chance of recovery from these ordeals, you must face the attacks straight on. Understand that many panic attacks that you may have already endured were triggered due to fear of an imaginary, future event. Many young children become afraid of an imaginary monster lurking underneath their beds. Realistically, creatures do not hide in the bedroom of youngsters, waiting to attack once the lights are turned off for at night. The irrational thoughts inside the minds of young kids tell them that something evil is hidden under their beds.
If you, (as an individual age 15 – 90) suffer from panic attacks, it is essentially the same principle in comparison to that young child who is afraid of being alone in his/her bedroom at night. The 6 year old child who has irrational and imaginary thoughts in his/her head believes that an 8 legged, 3 eyed, purple-colored monster will attack after the lights are out. Likewise, your attacks are often caused by the irrational thoughts in your mind, dwelling on an imaginary future event. The attacks that you have suffered from were, of course, not caused by your fantasy of an ugly monster doing you potential harm. But, your personal “monster” may be a fear like the following imaginary scenario:
You and your spouse are taking a cruise that you have been planning together for 8 months. It will be your first time being on a ship. Because you learned that the itinerary for one of your destinations has you sailing near the Bermuda Triangle, you suddenly fear that the ship will sink, or disappear never to be found by anyone. Luxurious cruise ships sail in that part of the Atlantic practically on a daily basis. Yet, because last week you watched that ridiculous “Airport” movie from the late 70’s, (the one in which the Boeing 747 jumbo jet crashed because it flew near this area in the Atlantic Ocean); and also due to the fact that the “Titanic” movie happened to be on one of the cable channels again, suddenly your mind has imaginary thoughts that the same thing will happen to your ship. And, you also irrationally think that you will not have the same fate as Kate Winslet’s character “Rose” in the Titanic movie. Rose survived the ship’s sinking and lived for another 80+ years. You fear that when your ship sinks you will not be so lucky.
Despite the fact that today’s modern cruise liners have sophisticated, 21st century radar technology versus the famously misplaced pair of binoculars that doomed the Titanic back in 1912; the illogical, imaginary image of the ship sinking near Bermuda begin to take over the thoughts within your mind. Even though you would lose money by cancelling 2 days before the ship is set to depart, you have a discussion with your spouse claiming that you can’t set foot on this cruise ship. Your mind has convinced you that the trip is doomed and that you will perish. Your constantly imagining that the cruise ship will sink in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean has become your “monster” in this scenario.
Panic attacks themselves are not based off of real events. They are caused by your mind creating imaginary scenarios. If these thoughts are allowed to escalate from within your head, the level of irrationality builds to a point where an attack takes place. Your body’s nervous system in conjunction with your brain becoming over-stimulated with these illogical thoughts; is the blueprint for attacks to repeat themselves many times. Panic attack recovery calls for you, the individual to be able to regain control of the thoughts coming from your mind.
You must recognize the panic attack for what it is; your fear of an imaginary event. The event is something in the future, not even remotely guaranteed to ever happen in fact. Irrationally dwelling on the future, should be replaced by your living in the present. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. If you think about the present and can rationalize your immediate surroundings and environment around you, then it is one major step towards your recovery from these attacks.
Panic attack recovery is something that will take effort and patience on your part. Know that millions of people across the world suffer from these types of attacks, as you undertake your personal battle. A healthy percentage of these people are able to overcome this condition. As you read this, know that I am a person who was able to conquer my panic attacks; being able to regain control of my conscious thoughts. I know eventually you will be able to do the same. About the Author
Twelve years ago, I went through a very traumatic experience in my life. Because of that I eventually was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder through a medical professional in the field of psychiatry. I had many panic attacks that I often found to be overwhelming. At times, I feel as if I was not in control of the thoughts coming from my mind. Through behavior modification exercises provided by a trained medical professional, and through loving support of friends and family members, I overcame this disorder. I wish to offer support and guidance to those individuals who are going through the same ordeal as I did.
